The cost of cancelling both the outbound and therefore the inbound flight (particularly given Reg 261 compensation burdens) would far exceed the cost of handing out a pile of Avios. This is especially given that the compensation would mainly be claimed by those with CW and perhaps WTP tickets (the economy product was virtually the same with the exception of no PTVs).

Plus, depending on loads and assuming they put the WTP passengers up the front in Club Europe, BA would get out of providing these pax any compensation at all on the basis they’d ‘upgraded’ them. The cost there would be the extra J class meals which would result in a minimal cost increase to a WTP meal.
