Chris – I think you have hit the ‘First’ problem ex LGW on the head. There are typically no more than 10 long haul flights a day out of LGW by BA, all on their 777’s. Only 3 or 4 at most have a first cabin, of 14 seats. A similar Club fitted cabin can have rather more seats. It seems that many of the First pax are upgrades, paid for or for operational reasons, when the lack of First on the other routes – Orlando, Tampa, Cancun etc gives a higher income because of the lack of involuntary upgrades or paid for by avios.
It seems highly likely that the First routes will either be transferred to LHR or downed to a 3 class plane in time. Thus there is little reason to provide a First lounge at LGW given the small number of paid for First pax, as opposed to the DYKWIA brigade. A new Galleries lounge will be welcome if built to the latest spec elsewhere.
And to raise a new subject that is related, the LGW 777-200’s are now getting a little long in the tooth, always the poor relation to LHR, but surely there is case for replacement/substitution with the much oversold fleet updates coming through – 787-900 this year and 350’s a couple of years forward?
