I believe it is up to the airline to say thank you to the medic. Forgetting the medic / patient relationship, the airline in GarethForster1’s case was able to continuie to the destination, without a stop or a delay and therefore saved for the airline, a significant amount of money.
If airlines were that concerned, they would ensure a Dr is on all flights. Before anyone says this would be uneconomical, remember sky marshalls apparently exist …………….. and they get paid….!
