Can anyone recommend a suitable bag to carry onto a flight that could replace a backpack or laptop bag? (I don’t need a bag to replace check in luggage; have a good bag for carry on luggage)

I currently use a backpack with a decent padded compartment for a laptop and space for documents and books (much like the average laptop bag). Instead I’d like a bag that can easily hold a laptop and documents, but also has ‘open space’ for travel essentials (hold that last minute duty free purchase, books, newspapers, bottle of water, spare jumper etc.)

All the bags I have seen that fall into this category are either very well suited to holding laptops and work documents (so lots of filo-style compartments) or are just loose open bags with no sections for a laptop.

Nothing seems to bridge the two… any help?
