Subscriber exclusive: 50 top airport lounges

6 Jul 2009 by Sara Turner

Business Traveller selects 50 of the finest facilities for working or relaxing before you board.

For frequent travellers, airport lounges are an important tool for making the most of “dead” time. The best lounges are a haven from the hassle of the airport, a place where you can eat and drink, relax or catch up on work. Sometimes it can seem we spend more time at airports than in the air, and for passengers using an airport as a hub to transfer from one flight to another, a lounge can make the most of what might otherwise be a wasted day.

So how do you gain admission? Typically, by flying first or business class, or by taking enough qualifying flights with a particular airline, or airlines belonging to a particular alliance. So take a look at your travel patterns and make the most of your travel spend. Alternatively, for some lounges you can simply pay for admission, or take a yearly subscription with organisations such as Priority Pass. Here, in no particular order, is our selection of 50 of the top offerings.

Europe

AMSTERDAM

1 KLM

As members of Skyteam, KLM customers will also be able to use the new Skyteam lounge at London Heathrow’s Terminal 4 (see number 11).

FRANKFURT

4 Lufthansa

Lufthansa’s lounges at Frankfurt have garnered much praise on our online forum, and there are several choices – the newest being the Tower first and business lounge in departure area A above Gate A65, and the first class lounge for connecting passengers in Terminal 1 (Pier B by Gate B22), both of which opened earlier this year. But the most impressive is the First Class Terminal next to Terminal 1. Effectively one big lounge in itself, it provides access to individual offices, bathrooms with showers and tubs, a personal assistant and limousine transfers to the plane.
