Paris hotels: Parisian nights

The French capital has seen a wealth of openings and revamps at all levels of the market – and there’s more to come. Michelle Harbi provides a round-up NEW... Molitor by MGallery Paris’s legendary lido, the Molitor, was reborn as a five-star hotel under Accor’s MGallery brand last May. Situated in the 16th arrondissement, the 1929 art deco complex has been transformed into a 124-room property with a restaurant devised by Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno and a rooftop bar/eatery. A gym and a Clarins spa join the 50-metre outdoor and 33-metre indoor pools. mgallery.com Citizen M Paris Charles de Gaulle The inventive Dutch brand landed at the hub airport last June. A short walk from Terminal 3, the front façade of the six-storey hotel is covered with a Julian Opie mural. The property has 230 high-tech guestrooms with free wifi and movies, funky living room-style public areas with Vitra furnishings, and a 24-hour canteen. citizenm.com The Peninsula Peninsula’s highly anticipated Paris property – the luxury group’s first in Europe – opened on Avenue Kléber, close to the Arc de Triomphe, last August. A lavish restoration of a grand 19th-century Haussmann building, formerly home to the Majestic hotel, the 200-room property has three restaurants, with one on the rooftop offering panoramic views. It also has a ground-floor bar, a cigar lounge and a spa. paris.peninsula.com Hotel Indigo Opera IHG’s boutique brand made its French debut last September. A couple of minutes’ walk from Place de l’Opéra, in a building that formerly housed a Citadines property, it has 57 rooms, suites and duplex apartments equipped with free wifi, along with a bistro and wine bar. ihg.com/hotelindigo La Réserve Hotel and Spa January saw the launch of luxurious La Réserve in a 19th-century building on Avenue Gabriel, close to the Elysée Palace. The 40 rooms and suites – which start from 40 sqm – feature plush furnishings and Carrara marble bathrooms. The property also has a contemporary French restaurant,a bar, a spa, a pool, a library for residents and a smoking room. lareserve-paris.com Hilton Paris Opera The former Concorde Opéra Paris was relaunched as a Hilton Hotels and Resorts property in January following a US$50 million refurbishment. Located opposite Gare Saint-Lazare, the historic building houses 268 rooms offering free wifi. Dining venues include the aptly named Le Grand Salon, and a brasserie. hilton.com AC Hotels by Marriott Marriott International has opened two properties under its four-star AC Hotels brand. Open since July last year, the 149-room AC Hotel Paris Porte Maillot is located close to the Palais des Congrès. That was joined in February by the 122-room AC Hotel Paris Le Bourget in the grounds of Paris Le Bourget airport located north-east of the city. marriott.co.uk Generator February saw the arrival of “luxury hostel” brand Generator. A 15-minute walk from Gare du Nord, it’s the largest Generator so far, with 916 beds. En suite doubles (from e98) come with desks and power showers, while eighth-floor Premium twins (from e128) have balconies, bathtubs and toiletries. The property has a café serving foie gras burgers and côte de boeuf, a bar and rooftop terrace. generatorhostels.com Melia La Défense Melia Hotels International opened this new-build four-star property in the high-rise business district last month. The 20-floor hotel has 369 rooms, two restaurants and 850 sqm of meeting space. The 19th floor has a bar and a gym offering panoramic views. melia.com Le Bains Legendary Marais nightclub Les Bains Douches – once the Studio 54 of Paris and, before that, a bathhouse – was about to open as a hotel as we went to press. The five-star property has 39 rooms and suites designed by Tristan Auer, who is also working on Hôtel de Crillon’s refurbishment. lesbains-paris.com IMPROVED... Hôtel Plaza Athénée The Dorchester Collection reopened this hotel last August after a ten-month closure. Public areas including the Alain Ducasse restaurant have been refurbished, while 14 rooms and suites and event space have been added. dorchestercollection.com Sofitel Le Faubourg Located close to Place de la Concorde, this 147-room property relaunched last month following an extensive redesign. Its new restaurant features cuisine by Yannick Alléno. sofitel.com Citadines Suites Arc de Triomphe Serviced apartment provider Ascott has upgraded this property to its Citadines Suites brand following a e26 million revamp. On Avenue Kléber, it reopened in February and has 112 units, a gym and a Turkish bath. citadines.com Pullman Accor’s five Pullman hotels in Paris – La Défense, Bercy, Montparnasse, Charles de Gaulle and Tour Eiffel – have all been revamped over the past couple of years at a total cost of e100 million. pullmanhotels.com COMING SOON... Hôtel Panache The former Hôtel Madrid Opera in the ninth arrondissement is to open as Hôtel Panache – a sister property to the city’s Hôtel Paradis – this summer. The 45-room property will have a restaurant and a cinema. hotelpanache.com Hyatt Centric Hyatt is expected to bring its new lifestyle brand to the City of Lights this summer. hyattcentric.com The Ritz The Ritz is due to reopen at the end of 2015 following a three-year renovation. Thierry W Despont – who previously revamped the Dorchester and New York’s Carlyle – is leading the redesign. The room count will drop from 159 to 143 to create larger rooms and more suites. ritzparis.com Hôtel de Crillon, a Rosewood Hotel Closed since March 2013 for a complete renovation, there’s no date yet for when the landmark Place de la Concorde property will relaunch as part of the Rosewood stable. When it does open – which could be later this year or into 2016 – it will have new restaurants and bars and two suites designed by Karl Lagerfeld. rosewoodhotels.com Hôtel Lutetia The luxury Left Bank property closed last April for a three-year revamp. On reopening it will be the third member of the Set Hotels, joining London’s Café Royal and Amsterdam’s Conservatorium. thesethotels.com
