Junior Suites - Make Work a Luxury

31 Oct 2011

If you have enough reward points or if an entry-level suite costs only a little more, why not treat yourself, writes Tiffany Sandrasageran

Another city, another room… and then your meetings begin. Travelling for business is work – occasionally, it is nice to chill out at the club lounge, but really you are only paying for the club floor because it has wifi, free boardroom hours and a concierge who helps you with errands.

But why does a work trip always have to be so dry? Many entry-level suites cost only slightly more than club rooms, and they add a touch of extra style and pampering that might be just what you need. If you are only in town for a busy day or two you might not have time to fully appreciate the benefits of a move up to suite class, but for a longer trip, the luxe factor can be well worth the money (and reward points).

At comfortable sizes ranging from 50 to 95 sqm, these junior suites do not have acres of open space that you simply don’t need, but they are spacious enough to remove any sense of confinement and give you a feeling of exclusiveness. Often, hotels will add extra perks and amenities such as Nespresso machines to these suites.

Read on for a selection of recommended entry-level suites offered by hotels in various popular business cities around Asia.

Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai

Situated in Pudong, Shanghai’s financial hub, the Pudong Shangri-La has two entry-level suite options available. In its River Wing, staying in one of its entry-level Horizon Suites gives you access to Shangri-La’s Horizon Club benefits, which include the use of lounge facilities, complimentary suit pressing and shoeshine service. The property’s other entry-level suite is the Premier Suite. With a slightly larger room area than the Horizon Suite, the Premier Suite is located in the property’s Grand Tower. Guests can choose their own pillow menus from buckwheat to Chinese traditional medicine pillows for an added touch of luxury. Guests in both suites also enjoy the services of a club purser, who functions like a butler to attend to your travel, hotel, shopping and entertainment arrangements.

The eButler service is part of The St Regis Butler Service. All butlers in the hotel will be equipped with BlackBerrys, so that guests can contact them via email. With this service, guests can simply drop an email to their butler whether they are inside or outside the hotel premises.
