A little unexpected, but Virgin Atlantic will begin flying rhe 787-9 to Seattle from 1st May 2017. The flight will operate on a daily basis. Will this affect BA’s operation to SEA? Where will VA go next?

‘Where will VS go next’ – anywhere DL tells them to!

DL has a hub at SEA so perhaps not that surprising. I think NW flew this route for a short while around the time they filed for Chapter 11 and got gobbled up by DL.

From memory BA have flown to SEA for donkey’s of years so not sure this will have a tremendous impact.

It’s still not officially confirmed by VS.

But isn’t it simply a case of VS taking over yet another route from DL ?

As we are seeing at MAN, it appears that DL is hiving off those routes to VS which are mainly used by point-to-point passengers.

VS is taking over the Delta rotation, the filed times for the Virgin service are the same as the current Delta service. This will become VS 105/106.

Delta has always been an aggressive airline. When will they dump the Virgin name?

I really hope that Delta/Virgin kicks BA’s ass.

Nice one FDOS, nice one. You might hope it, do you actually think it might happen though?

I don’t know, but a little bit of competition does have a way of focusing minds 🙂

Isn’t it just a marketing gimmick with DL passing their route to their partner VS?
I seem to recall ‘noise’ when VS started to fly to Detroit, but again wasn’t this route already served by their paymaster, DL?
It’s great to see new airlines start new routes, but I’m not sure I’d say this was genuinely new, plus it gets a little hard to keep track of what routes VS does fly as they appear (perhaps harshly) to chop and change a fair bit.

Why would it be a marketing gimmick? Seems like sensible resource management.

Virgin is something like Delta’s brand for the UK market. I suspect Delta operating this route as opposed to themselves would bring in more business. For me however, Delta 767s are more attractive than a Virgin 787.

Confirmed that VS will take over the DL operation of the SEA route from LHR, along with the MAN to JFK flight from next May for the Summer only.

However the VS operated flight to Detroit if I read correctly be operated by DL.

    Details on email as below:

“Effective summer 2017, Virgin Atlantic will start flying between London Heathrow and Seattle, replacing the service currently operated by Delta. Delta will operate a second daily flight from Heathrow to Detroit, taking over the existing Virgin Atlantic service and operating it three times a week. In addition, from 25 May 2017 and for the summer schedule only, Virgin Atlantic will operate the daily nonstop service between Manchester and New York-JFK, currently operated by Delta, while Delta will operate a third London Heathrow to Atlanta frequency, a service currently operated by Virgin Atlantic.”

This is simply DL moving around pieces of their global puzzle, while the other two carriers look around on the floor for theirs.
