Going to Barbados in September. Can you please advise if it’s better to take US or Barbados Dollars. Do shops prefer US to their own currency?

I’m looking at pre-loaded debit card/low fee credit card plus some cash. I realise that the best cash deals are online. Staying all-incl so it’s just for buying gifts, trips out, incidentals.

Last time I had to think seriously about spending money, travellers cheques were still popular!

I seem to recall the Barbados $ replaced the East Caribbean $ & that it is pegged to the US$ at 2:1

I’d just take US$ – easier to get hold of & can be used more easily in other places should you have any left.

The spreads on Caribbean currencies are horrendous I think.

Take US$, and can confirm its a fixed 2:1 rate, have fun.
Have found that pre-ordered travel funds from Moneycorp offer good rates, with the upside of the rate on collection being in your favour, it replaces the pre-order one.

I’ve never been to Barbados but I have many friends who have, and they tell me they always take US$. Apart from some government institutions – which you’re anyway unlikely to need – they’re universally accepted.

Thanks everyone for your valued advice. Now to make the big decisions on what to pack!
