    Currently attempting to book an ex-EU flight on the BA website. My planned itinerary routed me via:

    DUB-EWR-DUB

    However, to avoid the issue of having baggage sent to Dublin (final destination), I attempted to reroute the final leg from LGW rather than LHR so I could collect my luggage and leg it home. 😉

    This is now not possible. Whenever I try to book a flight, the website redirects me and, after some time, informs me that I cannot fly this itinerary. A BA agent suggested I allow for 180 minutes connection time – I have done this and still to no avail.

    Could this mark the end of ex-EU flights with British Airways when taking hold baggage? I hope not. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

    I would be very surprised if that was the case.

    Why not on the return journey book a long layover at LHR and then insist your checked bag is only as far as LHR “you have to drop some presents off”. I have done this on ex OSL from Oz twice now with no probs. I was the “Too tired and emotional to travel my last sector”.

    As an avid ex-Europe passenger, my advice is to:

    play the game and win the gain – try to be clever and the gain wont be so clever!!

    If the airlines didn’t get the gain of true European passengers, ex-Europe tickets wouldn’t be offered in the first place… I don’t believe the airlines lose in the long term..

    Now I have a date at Wembley – come on the blue team……

    A more interesting points is whether ex-EU flights are converging with ex-LHR flights in terms of prices. I’ve just been checking flights to New Orleans for Thanksgiving and both ex-LHR and ex-DUB flights are £2300 rtn. I know that ex-DUB flights are normally cheaper but I was surprised to see this.

    The only possible element of truth in the thinking is that all BA Gatwick flights will go over to a Veuling operation soon….Alex Cruz, new BA CEO, ex-Veuling and all that!

    Have you tried doing Dub-Ewr-Lon? I did this with an ex EU trip to SEL. I paid about £20 more for the flight.

    when I used to bail out i just asked at check in to only check bags to first stop, never attempted to do it at booking. I am with Martyn though, I do the full routing now

    Speedbird – maybe not allowing LGW as BA don’t fly DUB- LGW. It’s only EI currently.

    @Speedbird

    I tried your booking and was able to get the flights.

    on the BA site,

    1. go to Multi City bookings
    2. enter 3 sectors as follows [DUB->EWR] + [EWR->LON] + [LON->DUB]

    Sectors 2 and 3 above are for consecutive days since EWR is an overnight flight.

    You will see that on the 3rd sector, you will be offered BA flights from LCY to DUB.. and this is your escape !!

    Have fun

    I would suggest booking the trip as code-share flights on the American Airlines web-site, certainly this appears to work for DUB-EWR-LHR. Provided you put in your BAEC number, the booking will appear on your up-coming BA flights list and you should earn just as many Avios and tier points.

    I booked MIA. We leave MIA on the 5th arriving on the 6th, but next sector is on the 7th. Stopover in London for booking purposes.
