icenspiceParticipantI have a ticket to Bali with KLM and was thinking why not pop down to Australia for the first time as a side trip.
I have relations in Sydney and Queensland. No doubt they would all welcome me with open arms even though I have only met a few of them, but have decided to go for either Perth or Darwin.
I am talking about 3-4 nights. Which city would you recommend? Thx

PeterCoultasParticipantDifficult as totally different – depends what you like – Darwin with wonderful backdrop (not during the wet as travel is hard) kakadu, Lichfield and more with a hire car but 3-4 days is short …not too impressed with Darwin as city
Perth/Freemantle is much easier for relaxed short stay – also go south for great wineries and coastal scenery – Perth beaches have much to recommend & visit the quokkas on a short boat trip!

MrMichaelParticipantPersonally icenspice I would opt for Darwin. It would be a shorter trip by some margin, and would give you the opportunity to see crocks in their natural habitat. Having said that though, give Broome some consideration, although you would have to transfer in Darwin.

+1 and I’ve now wiped away the laughter tears to say that I have been missing your rather, shall we say, “pithy” observations of late. However, I am delighted to see that you are back on stream and in excellent form. Any chance of any more one-liner either/or travel guides…?

paulkazParticipantDepends on time of visit. Southern winter in Darwin is pleasant, it has a rebellious vibe and close to kakadu for an incredible wild life experience. How ever you will already be getting a tamer tropical experience in Bali. Perth will be 18c ish likey wet and a dull big town. ( I m from Sydney so a little bias)
Southern summer Perth becomes a beach out door type city and yes Darwin a swamp.
I would suggest Cairns instead of both, and head 1 hour north to Port Douglas. This is a beautiful slightly ritzy small holiday town but access to remarkable rain forests, croc infested rivers, beaches, great barrier reef and cowboy like cattle properties west of Atherton. It s tropical but summers are drier than Darwin and people more sane! Enjoy30 May 2015

Thank you for your undeservedly kind comment.
I find these days I have less and less time to look at forums and I have to say the quality of posts in this one has deteriorated rather a lot over recent times.
It’s also much less relevant to my life here in Singapore than it was once as I begin to look towards the end of a career in which airlines have played a large part over the last thirty five years and I think of my retirement at the end of this year.
I’ll continue though to keep an eye on you all from time to time.

conshaldowParticipantPersonally I’d go with Darwin. For 3-4 nights it is perfect. I’d suggest things to do as follows…
– Take a tour of Kakadu National Park
– Tiwi Island/Bathurst Island day tour
– Dinner aboard The Ghan (have done this myself and is a fantastic experience)I’ve yet to experience Perth as yet though, so my opinion on this is a bit biased.
