Caribbean cruise

My mother has a special birthday next year and we are looking at a caribbean fly/cruise. Can anyone offer any assistance please on who are the best/worst companies. Problem we have is it’s currently 5 who are going, 3 are same family and the cost of a single cabin on P&O is extortionate. They even want to charge any extra £100 each for flying from BHX.

Would 3 sharing be very cramped? My budget does not extend to paying more than the others just to have a cabin to myself. If I’m spending a lot of money on this holiday, I want value which means I don’t want to be sitting on a charter flight having paid extra for the “priviledge” nor contemplating a package company cruise (eg Thomson or Saga).

I cruise a lot – mainly with Royal Caribbean and Celebrity these days.
We used to swear by P&O but they’ve downgraded their product quite a bit – they are just not the elegant experience they once were. The last P&O one I was on in the Caribbean was very rowdy – however I did get drunk a few nights as well, so shouldn’t really judge.
The best thing about a P&O Caribbean cruise however is the way they get you to your cruise in Barbados. We had a Thomson 767 last time with fantastic legroom and great crew – the best economy legroom across the Atlantic. Plus jumping off the plane (not literally) right onto a bus which takes you to the ship without collecting luggage or immigration queues is fantastic.
A 3 berth cabin for 14 nights is probably a bit much – you would get cabin fever. Plus storage space for clothes etc would be a problem.
It really depends what you want from a cruise – We go Royal Caribbean with the kids because the ships really are very glitzy, entertainment suits us etc, but Celebrity for a bit more sophistication.
MSC are usually best for single prices – I went to the Baltic last August for £550 on my own, but I wouldn’t recommend MSC – service standards are appalling.
Just as an aside, I am doing a 7 night Princess cruise on my own from Vancouver down the coast to Los Angeles next month for £237!!! I don’t know how I did it either. I’ve used Avios to get to Vancouver in Club so that’s ok, but £237??? Must have been a glitch.

You need to consider what is most important to you, if it is food and entertainment go for the cheaper cabin on the four or five star ship, if it is relaxing in private perhaps with balcony and or a suite, then you might opt for the three star ship but the best cabin on board.\
