Last month we reported on a £200 million plan by London City Airport (LCY) to increase flights by 58 per cent.

The plans would involve extending the terminal, building new taxi-ways and providing more parking stands for larger aircraft.

The plans had been approved by Newham Council.

However, this evening the Newham Recorder (the local newspaper) reports that Mayor Boris Johnson has written to the Council. He has instructed its development control office to refuse planning permission to build the extra facilities on grounds of noise.

    More information is awaited.

…at its worst I presume you mean.
I do not see how he can refuse when Newham Council have given the go-ahead. However, it would not surprise me to think he still is posturing before the electorate about resurrecting the big white elephant that he wants to sink in the outer Thames Estuary.
I hope the DfT can overule him.

Hmmm… I am struggling to remind myself of the fundamental principle on the Tory-side of the Coalition government towards planning issues. Ah, yes, there it is: localism – as in “let the locals decide….” Or is there a different definition that I am unaware of?

Living close to LCY, I find I am using it more and more as a true convenience. The BA LCY-JFK flight is terrific, so simple and hassle-free. Security has improved dramatically at the airport (as in speed of processing), even the lounge renovations are better (though it still can get crowded at peak times).

The expansion would bring the airport in line with world-class facilities, which would increase employment, revenues and opportunity in an area of London that is still struggling.

Newham has some of the biggest challenges when it comes to poverty, education, drugs, etc. Any investment in improving LCY should be hailed as a golden opportunity…not something on Boris’ political agenda. Hopefully Eric Pickles or DfT can convince the powers to proceed.

    Boris is clearly Bonkers!

LCY has the opportunity to grow and expand bringing more business to the City, making the airport more streamlined by the removal of backtracking on the runway, plus extra much needed stands. Coupled to this is the forthcoming airspace change in December this year which makes the operation more streamlined and efficient.

Without expansion LCY will start to stagnate and not offer the City the growth that is coming. Boris needs to take a long hard look and realise that growth is the way forward and his Thames Esturary dream is nothing but a dream and will only ever remain so.
