Detroit tops list of best US cities for business travel

A high percentage of on-time flights and reasonably priced hotel rooms helped Detroit to take the top spot in a new ranking of business travel-friendly cities in the US.

Travel risk management firm On Call International ranked the top 20 US business travel destinations based on five factors: number of on-time flights, cost of lodging, reliability of mobile network coverage, traffic congestion, and hospital emergency room efficiency.

Detroit topped the rankings by placing in the top five in each category without finishing first in any one area. The other business travel-friendly cities identified by On Call included Phoenix, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Denver and Dallas. New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Miami and Boston placed at the bottom of the rankings.

Atlanta performed best in terms of on-time flights, while Orlando had the best prices on hotel rooms and Cleveland travellers faced the least traffic congestion. Atlanta and Chicago had the most reliable 4G LTE mobile coverage, and Denver hospitals had the best emergency-room response time and triage efficiency.

New law increases US pre-clearance facilities at Canadian border

U.S Canadian-border

New Law opens door to U.S. Customs pre-clearance in more Canadian airports

Aims to make cross-border passenger air and rail travel more efficient.

A new U.S. law paves the way for additional U.S. Customs pre-clearance facilities in Canadian airports and train stations, which officials said will make cross-border passenger air and rail travel more efficient.

The Promoting Travel, Commerce, and National Security Act, signed into law by U.S. President Barack Obama on December 16, 2017, is aimed at bringing U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance for U.S.-bound travelers to priority Canadian gateways like Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and Montreal’s Central Station.

The U.S. currently has pre-clearance facilities at 15 airports in six countries; most are in Canada, including Calgary International Airport, Edmonton International Airport, Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport, Montreal Trudeau International Airport, Ottawa MacDonald-Cartier International Airport, Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, and Winnipeg International Airport. The others are in the Caribbean, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates (https://www.businesstraveller.com/news/2015/01/12/etihad-us-immigration-pre-clearance-extended-to-all-flights/).

“This Act is key to the long term strategy of the United States and Canada to make cross-border transit more efficient, fostering economic development and improving safety and security of our shared border,” said Joe McHugh, senior vice president of government affairs at Amtrak (https://www.businesstraveller.com/features/ten-top-global-rail-links/), the U.S. national passenger railway. “When implemented, Amtrak passengers can look forward to a more reliable, safer and more efficient cross-border experience.”

“Preclearance at Billy Bishop Airport will allow Porter Airlines to operate more effectively on our many existing U.S. routes, while also opening the door to serving new U.S. destinations,” said Porter Airlines President and CEO Robert Deluce at a press conference in Burlington, Vt., with the legislation’s lead sponsor, U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy. Porter Airlines operates seasonal flights between Billy Bishop Airport and Burlington International Airport.

Eva Air launches Taipei-Chicago service

EVA Air B777-300ER

Taiwanese carrier Eva Air launched its new non-stop Taipei-Chicago service on Wednesday (November 2, 2016), making the city the airline’s eighth gateway in North America.

The route’s inaugural flight arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 1600 local time on Wednesday following a 14-hour flight from Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport, which carried approximately 300 passengers including the airline’s president, Derek Chen.

“We have steadily developed, expanded and upgraded our global network and Chicago is an important link,” said Chen. “After we launch service to Chicago and add flights on other North America routes, Eva will be offering 80 flights a week to Asia by the end of the year. Our flight frequency will outnumber that of every other airline in this market.”

Eva will be deploying Boeing B777-300ER on the route, which it will service four times weekly. The B777-300ER is configured with 333 seats – 39 in Royal Laurel Class (business), 56 in Elite (premium economy) and 238 in economy – and features in-flight wifi and the latest entertainment systems.

Details for the service are as follows (all times local):

On October 3 this year, Eva Air increased the frequency of flights on its Taipei-New York (JFK) service from ten times weekly to twice daily, following an earlier increase from daily to ten times weekly back in July.
