Turkish Airlines is rolling out dozens of SmartMic language translation devices to help improve communication between customers and staff.

Passengers can speak into the devices in their native tongue, which will then translate what has been said into staff members’ first language.

The devices feature seven-inch screens on either side, allowing both passengers and staff to follow translations in real-time.

A total of 100 of the devices – which supports 52 languages and 72 accents – have been introduced at the carrier’s Istanbul hub, as well as regional airports including Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman and Izmir.

Turkish Airlines said it would also “shortly” launch the technology in the UK, with plans to extend the coverage across it global network during 2024.

Commenting on the news Bilal Eksi, Turkish Airlines CEO, said:

“At Turkish Airlines, we are all about connecting the world and making travel accessible to everyone. Therefore, we are excited to introduce this innovative SmartMic device, which allows our passengers to speak to our staff in their own language when transiting through Turkey.

“We want to ensure our passengers have a smooth, seamless travel experience, whatever their nationality, and hope the SmartMic devices make their journey with Turkish Airlines even more enjoyable.”

Turkish Airlines is set to launch its first flights to Australia next month – the inaugural service had originally been announced for 15 March but has since been brought forward to the start of the month.
