IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced plans to add a second New York property under its Kimpton brand.

The 364-room Kimpton Hotel Theta will occupy a 15-floor building at 790 8th Avenue in the city’s Theater District, with the opening scheduled for this autumn.

Business Traveller understands that the building was formerly home to the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square 8th Avenue.

Features will include a rooftop restaurant “with a speakeasy edge aptly inspired by the Cicchetti bars of the Italian Riviera“, as well as grab-and-go market and coffee concept in the lobby.

The hotel’s name has been inspired by the eighth letter of the Greek alphabet – a nod to the property’s location on Eighth Avenue.

Kimpton Hotel Theta will join the existing Kimpton Hotel Eventi, located around a mile away on 6th Avenue.

IHG purchased Kimpton in 2014, and has gradually expanded the brand beyond its US roots, with recent openings including Kimpton St Honoré Paris in 2021.

Commenting on the news Mike DeFrino, managing director, luxury and lifestyle Americas at IHG Hotels and Resorts, said:

“We’re looking forward to bringing another Kimpton to the New York City market, and Kimpton Hotel Theta will bring an unexpected, refreshing experience to the Midtown West neighbourhood.

“The hotel will serve as a boutique oasis designed to delight all guests who are looking to stay in the middle of it all but also have space to recharge and reset.”
