Marriott International has debuted its JW Marriott brand in Spain, with a property in Madrid.

Initially planned for a 2022 opening, the 139-room JW Marriott Hotel Madrid has now opened its doors in the city’s Canalejas zone, located within a building that once housed one of Madrid’s oldest perfumeries.

Architecture and design by Rockwell Group has preserved certain elements, including 19th century wrought iron columns, while introducing natural materials and a neutral colour palette into the interiors.

The hotel has also collaborated with the Spanish Academy of Perfurme to pay homage to the building’s heritage – guests are offered a traditional violet or rosemary-scented tea upon check-in and then choose from one of five scents to be place in their wardrobe.

The lobby also features an exhibition of antique perfume bottles, books and essences, and there are olfactory workshops in partnership with the Academy for guests to learn more about the city and their scent preferences.

Restaurant QU, led by award-winning chef Mario Sandoval, offers dishes crafted from ingredients sourced from the hotel’s garden. Suites are located on the upper floors, many of which include large terraces, and hotel facilities include a fitness room and wellness area, along with in-room amenities such as a yoga mat and complimentary access to video workouts and meditation practices.

Bruce Rohr, global brand leader at JW Marriott, commented:

“JW Marriott is at the forefront of the evolution of luxury travel, placing equal importance on mindfulness and well-being as we do on indulgence and comfort.

“With these brand pillars in mind, we are thrilled to bring the JW Marriott brand to Spain. JW Marriott Hotel Madrid is an ideal reflection of who we are and what we represent, from its thoughtful design to the bespoke programming crafted with guests’ holistic wellness in mind.”

Marriott has a portfolio of over 100 JW Marriott properties in more than 35 countries and territories. The brand recently added its second hotel under the JW brand in Germany:
