IHG Hotels and Resorts has opened its latest Hotel Indigo property in the UK, located in the southwest city of Exeter.

The 104-room hotel is housed within a former House of Fraser department store on the city’s Catherine Street, which closed in 2019.

Hotel Indigo Exeter has drawn inspiration from the original building on the site – the Colson’s department store which was opened in 1792 by local milliner Mrs Colson.

Rooms feature Hypnos beds with Egyptian cotton linen, as well as Nespresso coffee machines, 43-inch TVs and free wifi.

Facilities include Colson’s Bar and Restaurant, rooftop bar Becketts, The Dugout Sports bar, and The Retreat Spa with four treatment rooms, two hydrotherapy pools, fitness centre, sauna, steam room, nail bar and a lounge serving champagne.

Hotel Indigo Exeter is operated by Castlebridge Hospitality, which also counts Hotel Indigo Chester, Hotel Indigo Stratford upon Avon and Hotel Indigo Bath (which opened in 2020) within its portfolio.

The Hotel Indigo brand launched in 2004, and currently has around 135 properties across over 15 countries, including recent openings in Vienna, Brisbane, New York and Tokyo, with a further 124 hotels in the brand’s pipeline.

Commenting on the news Carol Hoeller, vice president global brands – Hotel Indigo, said:

“This is another exciting opening for the Hotel Indigo brand. The southwest of England has always been a draw for visitors due to the unique city neighbourhood and character of Exeter itself.

“Hotel Indigo Exeter will draw on all those hallmarks to ensure our guests experience the true local flavour of the area in each stay at the hotel.

“The Hotel Indigo brand has experienced a great 2022 with strong growth globally, with local openings such as this in Exeter a key driver for that growth.”

Hotel Indigo Exeter is the second property to open in the city under a major hospitality group this year, following the unveiling of a Courtyard by Marriott hotel situated next to Sandy Park – a conference and events centre and home to the Exeter Chiefs rugby union club.
