IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced the signing of two Lisbon properties, which will operate under the group’s Vignette Collection and Crowne Plaza brands.

The 121-room Convent Square Hotel Lisbon in the city’s Baixa district will join IHG’s fledgling Vignette Collection in 2023, following “extensive redevelopment”.

The property is set around a cloister and dates back to 1242, with current features including an indoor pool, sauna, restaurant and patio area.

IHG launched the luxury lifestyle Vignette brand in 2021, with three Portuguese hotels joining the collection earlier this year.

Meanwhile the group is also set to convert an existing golf and spa hotel in Lisbon’s suburb of Caparica to its Crowne Plaza brand.

The 227-room Hotel Aldeia dos Capuchos Golf and Spa is situated around 15 minutes’ drive southeast of Lisbon, and a ten-minute walk from the beach.

Features include a room mix of standard bedrooms, studios and apartments, as well as three F&B venues, a wellness centre, outdoor swimming pool and nine-hole golf course.

IHG has been steadily growing its Portuguese portfolio – aside from the Vignette additions above, the group unveiled several new signings earlier this year, including properties under it Six Senses, Staybridge Suites and Holiday Inn Express brands.

Commenting on the news Willemijn Geels, VP development Europe at IHG Hotels and Resorts, said:

“We are delighted to be announcing two more signings in Portugal – a key growth area for us. The historic Convent Square Hotel will be a flagship property within our portfolio and coincides with Vignette Collection’s first birthday, building on its strong momentum since launch, with over ten high-quality deals in leading destinations already signed, and a vision to reach 100+ in 10 years.

“Similarly, we warmly welcome Crowne Plaza Caparica Lisbon to the fold as the brand continues its strong presence within Europe with 89 open hotels and a further 16 properties in the pipeline. Both signings are contributing to IHG’s strong development pipeline, furthering the company’s ambition of industry-leading net rooms growth.
