Doha’s Hamad International airport (HIA) has opened a second hotel within its transit areas.

The 100-room Oryx Garden Hotel is located in the North Plaza, with guests able to use the passenger train to visit sister property Oryx Airport Hotel in the South Plaza should they want to use its Vitality Wellbeing and Fitness Centre. The centre features a 25-metre swimming pool, gym, spa and squash court.

On the sustainability side, the new hotel will replace plastic water bottles with eco-friendly alternatives; use recycled paper for all hotel printing collaterals and operations; and substitute plastic bags with biodegradable bags.

Within the rooms, plastic cotton buds have been replaced with bamboo buds packaged in cardboard boxes, plastic coffee cups have been switched with recyclable paper cups, and plastic lids have been replaced with polylactic acid (PLA) lids derived from plants.

Meanwhile, bathrooms include shampoos and body lotions in Eco Pure PET biodegradable bottles, starch toothbrushes and shaving utilities, and eco-friendly slippers, combs and shower caps.

HIA’s COO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al Meer said:

“We are delighted to announce the opening of our second airport hotel at HIA. This is just one of the many new offerings our airport will be unveiling as part of our exciting expansion plans. The Oryx Garden Hotel adds yet another sustainable, world-class facility to the world’s best airport, offering a relaxing environment for guests to unwind and discover the extraordinary destination that is HIA.”

Along with the new hotel, HIA is set to unveil its airport expansion project in time for the FIFA World Cup in November, with the airport increasing capacity to over 58 million passengers.

The project will see the addition of more than 90 brands in one shopping area, an art collection,  and a 10,000 sqm indoor tropical garden with a 268 sqm water feature.

This growth will be followed by a second expansion after the global event, taking capacity to over 60 million passengers.
