Kempinski will add the first North American hotel to its portfolio next month, when it takes over the management of the existing Ritz-Carlton Cancun.

The hotel will initially be reflagged as Grand Hotel Cancun – managed by Kempinski from September, before rebranding as Kempinski Hotel Cancun from the end of 2022.

The Ritz-Carlton Cancun was the first property outside of the US under Marriott’s luxury brand when it opened nearly 30 years ago.

Located in Cancun’s hotel zone – a 13-mile strip lined with hotels, restaurants, shops and nightclubs – the property features 315 rooms and 48 suites, as well as eight dining options including two AAA Five Diamond Award restaurants.

Other facilities include a club lounge, two swimming pools, an oceanfront whirlpool, a spa with gardens and terraces, a fitness centre with sauna and steam rooms, a tennis centre, 1,000 sqm ballroom, and private cabanas on the hotel’s 400-metre stretch of beach.

Kempinski said that the property “will undergo various improvements and adjustments to the Kempinski brand standards in the coming months”.

The group’s presence in the Americas is currently limited to three properties in Cuba, and a hotel on the Caribbean island of Dominica.

Commenting on the news Bernold Schroeder, chief executive officer of Kempinski Group and chairman of the management board of Kempinski AG, said:

“To enter the North American territory with our very first property there and to extend our footprint in this crucial market is an outstanding opportunity for Kempinski. Cancun is a top vacation destination for guests from The Americas,  who also make up a good proportion of our guests in the rest of the world as well as for Europeans.

“During a three-month transitional period, we will ensure that we implement our Kempinski DNA in the operation of this outstanding beach hotel and that we extend our brand recognition by delivering the impeccable service and quality Kempinski is renowned for.”

“In addition to our presence in Cuba and Dominica, this will be another outstanding option for our esteemed guests to spend their holidays with us in the Caribbean.”
