IHG Hotels and Resorts plans to open an Intercontinental property in Bucharest next year, marking the return of the brand to Romania.

Intercontinental Athénée Palace Bucharest will open in January 2023 in a building dating back to 1914, with many of its 283 rooms offering views of the Ateneului Park and the Romanian Athenaeum.

Dining venues will include breakfast area and all-day space Roberto’s; Café Athénée for dining; and the English Bar for drinks.

There will also be 13 meeting rooms of varying size and a ballroom with a stained glass roof.

Wellness facilities will include a gym, indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, two treatment rooms and two beauty salons.

The hotel is located close to the Palace of the Parliament and a 40-minute drive from Henri Coanda International airport.

The Intercontinental brand opened its first property in Bucharest in 1971 but the hotel closed in January 2022, with the now renamed Grand Hotel Bucharest currently undergoing a renovation.

Willemijn Geels, VP Development Europe, IHG Hotels and Resorts, said:

“InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest is the latest in a series of signings by IHG in prime destinations across Europe including InterContinental Resort Crete and Kimpton St. Honoré Paris over the past 12 months. We are looking forward to a year of continued growth in 2022 and to strengthen our commitment in Romania in the years to come.”

The opening is in partnership with Romanian-based hotel owners ANA Hotels, which already owns and operates the Crowne Plaza Bucharest. IHG also has a Holiday Inn property in the Romanian capital.

The Intercontinental brand celebrated its 75th anniversary last year and currently has 31 hotels across Europe, with recent singings including Intercontinental Resort Crete.
