IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced plans to open the first property under its lifestyle Voco brand in Japan.

The new-build Voco Osaka Central is set to open in 2023, and is the brand’s 75th signing since it launched in 2018.

The hotel will be located close to the city’s Yodoyabashi, Honmachi and Higobashi stations, and will feature 191 rooms, as well as a restaurant, café, fitness centre and meeting space.

There are currently 35 Voco properties operating worldwide, with another 40 under development. Recent openings include Voco Venice Mestre – The Quid, Voco Auckland City Centre, and Voco The Bank Johannesburg Rosebank.

Voco Osaka Central will join Intercontinental Osaka, ANA Crowne Plaza Osaka, Holiday Inn and Suites Shin Osaka, Holiday Inn Osaka Namba and Holiday Inn Express Osaka City Centre Midosuji, as the sixth IHG-branded property in the city.

Commenting on the news Abhijay Sandilya, managing director – Japan and Micronesia for IHG Hotels and Resorts, and CEO of IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan, said:

“We are excited to introduce the Voco Hotels brand to Japan for the first time in partnership with NTT Urban Development Corporation. As IHG continues its period of expansion throughout Japan, we see a great opportunity for hotels that are fresh and different, with a colourful personality that combines the reassurance of a big brand with the informality and charm of an individual hotel.

“Voco has been one of IHG’s most successful brand launches, due to its unique guest offering as well as interest from hotel owners who appreciate the brand’s flexibility. We can’t wait to see Voco Osaka Central open in 2023, and we hope it’s the first of many in Japan.”

IHG recently debuted its Holiday Inn Express brand in Japan, and last year announced plans to add three Japanese hotels under Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Intercontinental brands
