Delta has announced two enhancements to its Skymiles loyalty programme, including making status earning on award travel a permanent benefit.

The carrier introduced the temporary ability to earn toward Medallion Status on Delta-marketed award travel last year, and has now confirmed that this will be a permanent benefit going forward.

Joint venture partner Virgin Atlantic also introduced status earning on award flights in 2020, as part of a raft of changes to its Flying Club programme.

In addition Delta is removing the current cap which limits Skymiles members to earn a maximum of 75,000 miles when booking a ticket, and is applying the change retrospectively back to January 1, 2022.

Last summer the carrier extended status benefits within its Skymiles loyalty programme, with Medallion members automatically seeing their status extended through to January 31, 2023, and Medallion Qualification Miles rolling over to 2022 for 2023 Medallion Status qualification.
