Iberostar has announced the Iberostar Cristina hotel (located in the Bay of Palma, in Spain) and Iberostar Herceg Novi hotel (located in the Bay of Kotor, in Montenegro) will become fully electrified hotels.
The two hotels are working to electrify their domestic sanitary hot water generation, heating and kitchens, applying changes that involve the elimination of stoves, ovens and hobs that work with gas, as well as the boilers that supply heating and water to the different parts of the hotel, including the common areas and guest rooms. Through the electrification of its hotel in Montenegro alone, 35,000 litres of propane will no longer be used per year.
This effort to promote electrification is part of Iberostar Group’s plan to achieve greater energy efficiency and lower energy consumption in different areas. In Spain, the aim is to use renewable energy, which this year will reach 100 per cent, since now all hotels consume clean energy with guarantees of renewable origin.
The family-owned multinational Spanish company is aiming to reduce energy consumption by 8 per cent in 2022, and 35 per cent in 2030 compared to 2019.
To do this, the company has created a work plan between different departments with the aim of maximising the measurement in the more than 100 hotels that the company has, to obtain more information and real data. With this data, the main and secondary energy consumption in each area of each hotel is analysed, and decisions are made accordingly. Other work teams are working on decarbonisation actions through investments, the use of science and technology and, not least, promoting changes in habits and behaviours to reduce energy consumption in hotels sustainably over time.
“With the electrification of these first two hotels, we are taking a first step towards the decarbonisation of our company, which will be achieved when we acquire 100 per cent of the electricity with a guarantee of renewable origin,” said Fernando García, Chief Resources Officer at Iberostar Group.
“In the case of the Iberostar Cristina we already have these guarantees, as in the rest of Spain, while in the case of the Herceg Novi hotel, we are in the process of obtaining them. At Iberostar Group we have launched an ambitious energy efficiency program which this year we will save 8 per cent energy and reach a level of savings of 35 per cent in 2030. In addition, we are increasing solar self-generation energy in some of our hotels in America and Europe, as well as the purchase of electricity from renewable sources in those countries where it is possible.”
Iberostar Hotels & Resorts has over 100 hotels in 16 countries. It has launched a Wave of Change initiative which aims for 100 per cent responsible seafood consumption at its hotels by 2025, and improving the health of ecosystems surrounding its hotels. Its 2030 Agenda sees it aiming to become waste free by 2025 and carbon-neutral by 2030.
