Hyatt has confirmed plans to add a property under its Hyatt Regency brand in the City of London.

There had been speculation for some time that the former Crowne Plaza London The City was to join Hyatt’s portfolio, and the group has now confirmed that Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars will open this July, following “an extensive refurbishment programme”.

Business Traveller last reviewed the Crowne Plaza property back in 2008.

The hotel is located on New Bridge Street just north of Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars station, which has links to Thameslink and Southeastern rail services, as well as the District and Circle Underground lines.

The Grade II listed property is situated on the site of Bridewell Palace, the former residence of King Henry VIII – although the palace itself has not existed since the 1860s.

Hyatt said that the hotel would offer an all-day New York style bistro and a specialty Chinese restaurant, as well as a cocktail bar with outdoor area, meeting spaces and a fitness centre.

Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars is the latest in a raft of new and forthcoming properties for the group in the UK capital.

Last month Hyatt announced plans to rebrand two existing IHG hotels in London’s Stratford under its Hyatt Regency and Hyatt House brands, and the group opened the first central London hotel under its select service Hyatt Place brand last summer, housed within a redeveloped 1980s office on Whitechapel Road.

Great Scotland Yard Hotel opened under Hyatt’s Unbound Collection shortly before the onset of Covid-19 (for our Tried and Tested review click here), and two other London hotels are also under development – the Park Hyatt London River Thames in London’s Nine Elms area on the south bank of the River Thames, and the Hyatt Regency London Olympia attached to the redeveloped Olympia London exhibition centre site on Hammersmith Road.

Commenting on the news Felicity Black Roberts, vice president of development of Europe at Hyatt, said:

“We are thrilled to announce plans for Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars, a hotel that demonstrates Hyatt’s confidence in London’s position as an attractive destination for both business and leisure travellers.

“Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars will be an exciting offering to the millions of people who visit the iconic city every year.”
