Hyatt has welcomed the Magma Resort Santorini to its upmarket The Unbound Collection brand.

The hotel will open in May 2022 and mark the group’s first Hyatt-affiliated hotel in the Greek islands.

Set among traditional old vineyards, the resort will be situated on the lava-made slopes of Vourvoulos, close to the lava sand beaches on the northeast part of the island and destinations such as Fira and Oia.

The hotel has been designed to “resemble a reimagined traditional Cycladic dwelling”, featuring a sustainable and modern exterior design which draws inspiration from the natural environment and the island’s underground spaces and cave homes.

It will incorporate organic shapes from black volcanic stones alongside contrasting, off-white geometric prisms.

The property will include 59 rooms and suites, all of which offer views of the Aegean Sea and Anafi Island, with 46 of these featuring private pools and hot tubs. The Magma by Spondi restaurant, curated by a two-starred Michelin chef, will offer fine dining options and renowned wines from the island.

Further facilities include a wellness centre, a subterranean spa and an events space for up to 250 guests.

The hotel group has entered into a franchise agreement with Thera Island Suites SA, with Athens-based Swot Hospitality operating the hotel.

Peter Norman, senior vice president of development for EAME & SWA, Hyatt, commented:

“We are thrilled to work with SWOT Hospitality and are excited to announce The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand’s upcoming entry into the Greek Islands with Magma Resort Santorini.

“The expansion of our luxury and independent collection brands in popular leisure destinations in Europe plays a central role in our growth strategy as we aim to satisfy the increasing leisure demand from travelers looking for story-worthy experiences.”

Stefanos Papakaliatis, managing partner at Thera Islands Suites, added:

“We are very pleased to be part of the Hyatt family by introducing The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand to Greece, and the story-worthy experiences that will come with its brand recognition. Together with Hyatt, we aim to set a new benchmark for hospitality in the destination.”

The Unbound Collection comprises over 25 properties in the world, including European destinations such as the Great Scotland Yard Hotel in London, Hôtel du Louvre in Paris, Parisi Udvar Hotel in Budapest, Hotel Martinez in Cannes, Hotel du Palais Biarritz, and Hotel Sofia Barcelona. The brand also plans to add properties in Helsinki, Mijas in Spain and Crans-Montana in Switzerland.
