Great Western Railway’s (GWR) popular Night Riviera Sleeper train will be disrupted from Monday of next week (January 24) until March 21.

In other words the Night Riviera will not operate on the nights of Monday to Thursday inclusive. It will continue to operate on Friday and Sunday nights.

This is caused by overnight engineering works taking place in the Dawlish area which means the line will be closed.

As regular users will testify, this section of the line running along the seafront at Dawlish is fragile in times of bad weather.

In February 2014 the line had to be closed completely for eight weeks when storm force winds caused a section of the track to collapse into the sea.

This time the work is being carried out between Dawlish and Holcombe as part of a £37.4 million resilience project for a 209-metre rockfall shelter north of Parsons Tunnel, reports Cornwall Live.

All other weekday and weekend train services are unaffected and will continue to operate as normal.

Mark Hopwood, GWR managing director, commented:

“Our Night Riviera Sleeper service is extremely popular and provides an important link between London, Devon and Cornwall, and we are sorry for the disruption that this engineering work will cause.”
