Shangri-La Group has opened its sixth property in China’s capital, housed within a former power plant in the city’s Shougang Park.

The 283-room Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing has views of Shijingshan Hill and Qunming Lake, and is an official hotel of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, with the Snowboard Big Air Venue being located close to the hotel.

Italian designer Piero Lissoni has transformed the former industrial building, retaining the original framework of the power plant and adding a glass facade “that encloses the building and leaves its structure intact while allowing natural light to infuse the space inside”.

This has allowed the reception area and lobby lounge to act as an indoor garden space, combined with steel elements including a red steel spiral staircase which connects the hotel’s public spaces.

The lobby atrium also features a mesh wire installation titled “Journey of Hope” by Japan’s Studio Sawada Design, which has been inspired by birds that migrate to the Yongding River.

The original building has been extended to house the property’s meeting and events spaces, and a new building offers 283 rooms and suites ranging from 42 to 84 sqm.

Other facilities include all-day-dining restaurant Shang Market, Shang Brew located next to Xiuchi Lake and serving craft beers, and 1,400 sqm of indoor events space including a grand ballroom which can accommodate up to 700 guests. A fitness centre and family suites will follow in 2022.

Commenting on the opening Shangri-La Group chief operating officer, deputy CEO and executive vice president, operations – China, Sunny Paw, said:

“Shangri-La Shougang Park, Beijing, epitomises our brand’s fresh interpretation of our classic Asian hospitality, and represents the next chapter of our story.

“We are also excited about opening our doors on the eve of the 2022 Winter Olympics and celebrating this significant event in Beijing.”
