KLM is increasing capacity on its route between Newcastle International and Amsterdam Schiphol airports.

From this week the Dutch flag carrier will offer up to four flights per day, with a total of up to 28 weekly services.

KLM said that the increase would complement sister carrier Air France’s 12 weekly flights to Newcastle, and refers to the move as “a significant investment and testament to KLM’s commitment to serving the North East’s largest airport”.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic Amsterdam remained the busiest route out of Newcastle in 2020 (albeit with passenger number significantly down on 2019), marginally ahead of London Heathrow.

As a sixth freedom carrier KLM is focused on attracting customers to connect onto its long-haul services via Amsterdam.

Fahmi Mahjoub, Air France & KLM General Manager (UK & Ireland), said that “While the aviation industry has had to adapt to challenges faced over the past 20 months and we continue to monitor the situation, we are pleased to be in a position where we can increase the number of flights we are offering”.

Meanwhile Leon McQuaid, head of aviation development at Newcastle International Airport, said:

“KLM is a very important and long-standing airline partner of ours, and we welcome the confidence the airline has shown by further investing in the region.

“As we move from 2021 and into 2022, the added capacity to the schedule will not only improve the region’s connectivity to Amsterdam but also throughout the world thanks to KLM’s wider global network.

“KLM’s investment at Newcastle International Airport allows even more choice for people to reconnect this Christmas, and we look forward to welcoming more passengers back to the airport.”
