South Africa is a popular winter destination for some of our readers.

So I am pleased to tell you that Johannesburg will again be served by British Airways’ A380 with effect from January 2022.

It’s hardly surprising really as London-Johannesburg must be a money-spinner for BA considering the fares are high and that South African Airways (SAA) no longer plies the route.

A380 schedules are already displayed on ba.com and flights are open for booking.

London-Johannesburg operations with the A380 commence on January 10 with the return flight (Johannesburg-London) effective on January 11.

A380 schedules are as follows:

BA 055 London Heathrow-Johannesburg 1820-0725 (following day)

BA 056 Johannesburg-London Heathrow 2010-0525 (following day)

At this point some readers might wonder what has happened to SAA. Although it restarted operations in September, it currently operates short-haul only.

Local media reports it could be some time before SAA flies long-haul again. It will also need a new fleet of long-haul aircraft seeing as SAA’s A340-600s are for sale.

Yesterday BA began its A380 short-haul training flights to Frankfurt and Madrid. Next month A380 long-haul services will resume to Miami, Los Angeles and Dubai.
