Melia Hotels International is set to open a hotel in the city of Chiang Mai in the fourth quarter of this year, located in the north of Thailand.

The hotel, owned by Thai real estate group AWC and launched by Melia, will occupy a 22-floor tower over the River Ping and Night Bazaar and adjoin a seven-floor podium building. Melia Chiang Mai will be located on Charoen Prathet Road, located six kilometres from Chiang Mai International airport.

The 260-room hotel will feature facilities including two restaurants, two bars, and two lounges. On the leisure side, there will be a spa with seven treatment rooms, a fitness centre and swimming pool.

Meeting facilities will include a 358 sqm ballroom (which is connected to an outdoor swimming pool and poolside bar), three function rooms on the tower’s second floor above the lobby, and a 175 sqm function room with an outdoor terrace on the podium building’s top floor.

Of the 260 accommodations, 38 rooms and six suites will belong to the category ‘The Level’ which includes access to the namesake executive lounge on the 21st floor and benefits including private check-in and check-out, breakfast service, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails and canapés.

The 22nd floor will be home to the city’s highest rooftop bar, which will connect to another bar via a glass bridge. Both will offer views of the River Ping to the city’s east and the Doi Suthep Temple on the mountaintop to the west.

The level below will host the hotel’s signature restaurant Nan Thai, which will focus on contemporary Northern Thai dishes with Mediterranean influences, drawing on the group’s Spanish origins. All-day dining restaurant Mosaic will also offer Mediterranean cuisine in a “marketplace setting”.

Khun Wallapa Traisorat, Melia Chiang Mai’s owner and AWC’s CEO and President, commented:

“With its exceptional location in the heart of Chiang Mai and an unparalleled array of facilities, Meliá Chiang Mai is a landmark project of our strategic roll-out of the Meliá brand in Thailand, in line with AWC’s growth-led strategy.

“Partnering with Meliá has allowed us to set a new benchmark for Thai hospitality and together, we aim to build a better future for Thailand’s tourism landscape and economy.”

Ignacio MartinArea Managing Director South East Asia of Melia Hotels International, added:

“Following the hugely successful opening of Meliá Koh Samui, ranked TripAdvisor’s number one hotel in Koh Samui, Meliá Chiang Mai will be another flagship property for Meliá Hotels International in Thailand.

“As we continue to strengthen our growth strategy with our key partners, AWC understands and shares our strong service and hospitality philosophy – a fundamental factor in ensuring the quality, reputation, and sustainability we strive for.”

Meliá Chiang Mai’s General Manager, Edward Snoeks, also commented:

“The global pandemic could not dampen our determination to unveil an extraordinary hotel that promises to exude the mystic splendor of Northern Thailand with Meliá’s warm Spanish hospitality, distinctive passion for service and focus on the customer’s wellbeing ever-present.”

This comes after the opening of Melia Koh Samui in January 2020, and will be followed in 2022 by the debut of the Innside brand in Thailand – Melia Bangkok Sukhumvit will feature 176 rooms and be located close to the Suvarnabhumi airport.
