IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced its second forthcoming Intercontinental hotel in Australia in as many months, with a 200-room property set to open in the Greater Western Sydney suburb of Parramatta.

The new-build Intercontinental Parramatta is scheduled to open in 2025, and will form part of a mixed-use development which will also include offices and ground floor retail space.

IHG said that “The building itself will be one of the most exciting high-rises to grace the city’s skyline, with the owners [Holdmark Property Group] in the process of running an architectural competition to find a winning design”.

Features will include a rooftop bar, restaurant, Club lounge, swimming pool, gym, wellness centre and over 900 sqm of meeting space.

The hotel will be situated on the corner of Church and Macquarie Street, and IHG said that “While Parramatta may not spring immediately to mind as a luxury destination, it’s regarded as the main commercial centre for the broader Greater Western Sydney Region and is Sydney’s newest CBD, as well as one of Australia’s fastest growing cities”.

Intercontinental Parramatta will be the 11th Intercontinental in Australasia, joining properties including the Intercontinental Sydney Double Bay, Intercontinental Sydney, Intercontinental Perth, Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove, Intercontinental Melbourne The Rialto, and Intercontinental Adelaide.

IHG recently announced plans to open an Intercontinental hotel in Australia’s Victoria state later this year. The 106-room property will be located in the coastal town of Sorrento, within a heritage listed limestone building which was formerly home to the Hotel Continental.

The group’s Adelaide property is also set to undergo refurbishment of its 367 rooms, as well as a facelift of its lobby and entrance, and work on the hotel’s restaurants, bars and events space.

Commenting on the news Abhijay Sandilya, IHG’s vice president, development – Japan, Australasia and Pacific, said:

“Parramatta is without doubt a super city of the future. To embark on this new-build project with new partners, Holdmark Property Group, and introduce our luxury Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts brand to the heart of Western Sydney is incredibly exciting.

“The transformation of Parramatta over the years has been extraordinary and the city is truly deserving of a luxury hotel; it has been crying out for one for a long time. Intercontinental has long been a pioneer in bringing luxury to new destinations, and we know that its arrival in western Sydney will bring a new era of sophisticated travel to the locale.”
