IHG Hotels and Resorts has opened a Kimpton property in the capital of the US state of Georgia, located in the neighbourhood of Buckhead.

Kimpton Sylvan Hotel is described as a “1950s-era adaptive reuse boutique hotel” with mid-century modern design and “heartfelt Southern hospitality”.

The 217-room hotel has drawn inspiration from Atlanta’s nickname of “the city in a forest”, with themes of trees, greenery and nature incorporated throughout the property. The name ‘Sylvan’ is also derived from the Latin term ‘silva’ which means ‘forest’.

The design team aimed to “work with the inspiring bones of the mid-century building” and create a series of spaces which connect to the surrounding greenery and feature natural light, a bright colour palette and original furniture pieces. The lobby features an oversized, curved fireplace wall with glazed tile and stone (see image above), while light filters through a pastel-coloured stained-glass wall from the lobby-adjacent Willow Bar. Design was led by firm Goodrich and Kimpton’s Global SVP of Design Ave Bradley.

The hotel also has an “eccentric” art collection which has been selected in partnership with Soho Myriad Art Consulting, and features contemporary and vintage pieces.

Rooms feature simple lines and skyline or garden views, along with amenities such as apothecary bath products, Frette linens, yoga mats, premium Bluetooth speakers, and bathrobes. The hotel also offers an evening social hour, morning coffee and tea service, same-day dry cleaning and laundry, amenities for pets, and digital daily newspapers.

Dining venues include The Betty, a “dark and moody” restaurant offering menus inspired by mid-century supper clubs with a modern twist, and a drinks list championing brown spirits and classic cocktails. Guests can enjoy the likes of wagyu beef cheek stroganoff with black pepper gnocchi, or whole salt crusted fish with artichoke and truffle amid an “old-Hollywood atmosphere”. The restaurant has an interior dining room and bar, and a 102 sqm outdoor patio.

Meanwhile, outdoor garden bar Willow Bar and rooftop bar and “funky” restaurant St Julep, which provides panoramic views of Buckhead, will open later this spring.

Leisure facilities include a fitness centre, a pool, and cruiser bikes. There is also over 370 sqm of meetings and events space, with each area named after a tree or flower found in Buckhead.

IHG purchased Kimpton in 2014, and has gradually expanded the brand into countries including the Netherlands and the UK.

Recent additions include the Kimpton Aluna Hotel in Mexico and Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow, and further properties are also under development in Bali Germany, Mexico, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and the Netherlands. The brand is also set to debut in France this spring, with a property in the capital.
