Lufthansa has released more details on its forthcoming buy-on-board food and drink service for economy short and medium-haul passengers.

The carrier announced plans to move to a buy-on-board offering in November last year, and plans to introduce the concept “in the course of the summer timetable 2021”.

Unlike the new British Airways buy-on-board partnership with Tom Kerridge – where items must be pre-ordered in advance of flights – Lufthansa said that orders for its menus “will be placed directly onboard”.

The airline is partnering with two Munich-based companies:

Dean and David

Dean and David (styled dean&david) will provide menus on flights of at least 60 minutes, with dishes including a salmon avocado bowl, falafel tahini salad, crunchy chicken bowl, sweet chilli chicken sandwich, and freshly made Bircher muesli. “Best of Dean and David boxes” will also be available offering a selection from the range.

Gate Gourmet is the new main caterer for Lufthansa’s European flights, and will prepare “essential components” of the meals including salads, bowls, wraps and sandwiches, “according to Dean and David recipes”.

Meals and snacks will range between €2 and €12, and the menus will be complemented by cakes and snacks from other manufacturers, including vegetable crisps. The menu will be updated every three months.

Dallmayr

In addition Lufthansa is expanding its partnership with Dallmayr, for its offering of inflight hot beverages, confectionery and patisseries. This will include Dano coffee, orginating from Ethiopia, with the firm working with local projects in the region including school building and the establishment of a coffee cooperation.

Highlighted beverage prices include a bottle of tomato or orange juice, a cup of coffee, hot chocolate or tea, for €3.

Customers will also receive a bottle of water, and “a small chocolate surprise” free of charge.

Commenting on the news Christina Foerster, Executive Board Lufthansa Group Customer, IT and Corporate Responsibility, said:

“Our partners Dean and David and Dallmayr represent outstanding quality and responsible action. In addition to the satisfaction of our guests, the topic of responsibility for the environment is also very important to us.

“We use almost exclusively sustainable materials for our packaging. Furthermore, we ensure that less food is wasted through more accurate production. We are pleased to be able to offer our passengers fresh products on European flights that taste delicious.”
