Virgin Atlantic Flying Club has announced a new status match promotion with British Airways’ Executive Club, enabling members to reach Silver or Gold status with just one flight booking.

To be eligible, members must make a new cash or reward flight booking by February 28, 2021, or have an existing booking for a future flight (note this must have been made before the start of the current sale period).

They can then head to virg.in/statusmatch, to provide proof of their current British Airways status and a booking reference for their upcoming Virgin Atlantic flight, and will receive a status match as follows:

  • British Airways Executive Club Bronze members will receive Flying Club Silver status for one year if they have a flight booked in Premium or Upper Class
  • British Airways Executive Club Silver members will receive Flying Club Silver status for one year if they have a flight booked in any cabin
  • British Airways Executive Club Gold members will receive Flying Club Gold status for one year if they have a flight booked in any cabin

The carrier says that the Gold to Gold status match is “a step up from the airline’s current status match programme, which requires Gold Card members to book flights in either Premium or Upper Class”.

Note also (as confirmed in Siobhan Fitzpatrick’s quote below) that Silver members are set to receive “a pair of Clubhouse vouchers” later this year. Silver tier members do not normally get lounge access.

Eligible status match customers will be upgraded “within 30 days of status match approval”.

Virgin recently revamped its Flying Club loyalty scheme, rebranding Flying Club miles as “Virgin Points”, and removing expiry dates for points.

The carrier is also currently offering 2,000 bonus points when members opt to auto-exchange Tesco Clubcard points for Virgin Points, following the recent decision by Avios and Tesco to terminate their partnership in January.

Commenting on the news Siobhan Fitzpatrick, chief digital and marketing officer at Virgin Atlantic, said:

“I’m delighted that by simply buying a ticket, we are making our Virgin Atlantic Flying Club benefits accessible to even more passengers.  I have no doubt customers will be thrilled by the vast array of advantages it provides, both in the air and on the ground, such as priority boarding and access to our award-winning Clubhouses.

“We’re committed to rewarding those who choose to fly with Virgin Atlantic and want all of our customers to make the most of their experience when travelling with us. I’d urge everyone to keep an eye on our latest Flying Club updates where there’s set to be some exciting changes, including a pair of Clubhouse vouchers for our Silver members, later this year.”
