Aparthotel firm Sonder is to open its first Glasgow property next year, as part of plans to expand its presence in Scotland.

The San Francisco-based company operates serviced apartments and hotels in over 30 cities, predominantly in the US, although it also has a presence in London, Dublin, Rome, Dubai, Mexico City, Toronto and Vancouver.

The group is gradually expanding into Scotland with an existing property in Edinburgh’s New Town, and The Herald reports that Sonder will open a 41-unit serviced apartment property in the Finnieston area of Glasgow in 2021, along with plans for further expansion in both Scottish cities.

“Our ambition would be to get to between 500 and 1,000 keys in Edinburgh,” the report quotes Lia Prendergast, Sonder’s general manager for the UK and Ireland.

“In Glasgow, we have signed a 41-unit building already but, again, we would have ambitions to grow further in Glasgow in the coming years.”

Prendergast also highlighted that the company operates hotels as well as serviced apartments, and said that “We are looking to expand both our hotel fronts, as well as the apartment fronts, in a city like Edinburgh over the next few years”.

Luxury serviced apartment brand Cheval Collection has also been expanding its presence in Edinburgh this year, with the addition of three properties, the most recent of which is housed within a 500-year old building next to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland.
