Cathay Pacific has a twist on the normal Black Friday promotion this year, as it promises to offset double the carbon emissions for every ticket booked in Europe through the Cathay Pacific website between November 20-30.

Using Cathay’s Fly Greener Carbon Offseting Scheme calculator, a non-stop LHR-HKG in business class would cost $HK48 return to offset, represented by 2.5 tonnes of emissions, and so this would also attract another $HK48 from the airline.

Fly Greener was launched by Cathay Pacific 13 years ago in 2007.  Cathay offers the option to offset all of its flights, and it says that in the last 12 months 33,922 tonnes have been offset from contributions made by both corporate and individual passengers, plus Cathay Pacific’s own contributions: through customer-facing promotions such as this one and offsetting employee duty travel.

All contributions will directly fund two carbon offset projects selected for Fly Greener, namely the Bondhu Chula Cookstoves project in Bangladesh and converting organic food waste into clean energy project in India.

Both projects have achieved the Gold Standard accreditation by coupling climate action with sustainable development. The Bangladesh project is managed by Climate Care while the India project is managed by First Climate.

The deals will be published in November 20 on our forum
