Miles earned with the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club will be known as ‘Virgin Points’ going forward, as part of a move towards a unified rewards currency for all Virgin companies.

The change was unveiled today along with a new logo, and was accompanied by the news that points will no longer expire (previously Flying Club Miles expired after three years of no activity).

To celebrate the change members purchasing Virgin Atlantic flights before October 1 will earn double Virgin Points on their booking.

Today’s new follows a number of enhancements made to the Flying Club programme last month, including a further status extension and a new benefit which will see members able to earn tier points on reward flights.

Virgin Atlantic unveils raft of Flying Club enhancements

Business Traveller reported on Virgin’s plans to develop a company-wide loyalty programme back in 2018.

Readers may remember the launch of Virgin Red in 2015, a similar group-wide membership app which promised “exclusive offers, events, and experiences from across the Virgin Group”. Today’s move means that Virgin Red now “becomes a data controller for personal information relating to earning, redeeming and management of Virgin Points as part of Flying Club Membership”.

Commenting on the news Siobhan Fitzpatrick, chief digital and marketing officer at Virgin Atlantic, said:

“We’re committed to supporting our most loyal members and creating opportunities for them to enjoy their hard-earned rewards. Flying Club miles have now changed to Virgin Points, which unlike currencies in other loyalty programmes, will never expire. This means members can build up their Virgin Points balance, for as long as they want, and redeem at their leisure, now or in the future.

“Virgin Points have exactly the same value as miles and members can continue to earn and redeem these across Virgin Atlantic, Delta and other partners as they do today, as well as collect tier points. The change in currency provides greater peace of mind for our members and paves the way for an expanded range of ways to earn and spend Virgin Points.

“To mark this milestone and reward our members as they plot their future travel plans, we’re offering double Virgin Points on every Virgin Atlantic flight booked directly with us by 1st October 2020.”
