Himachal Pradesh’s popular tourist destination Spiti valley is likely to remain shut until the end of this year.

Even though the state has lifted certain travel restrictions, the decision to remain closed for tourism has been taken by the Spiti Tourism Society, considering the consequences of the pandemic in the region.

Spiti has limited medical facilities, underdeveloped infrastructure and extreme geographical conditions.

Official notice by the Spiti Tourism Society says, “Spiti valley is closed for any kind of tourism activity for this year, specifically until October 31, 2020.

“The decision to close down tourism and keep Spiti and tourists safe has been taken unanimously after multiple meetings with the native population which include all stakeholders like hoteliers, homestay owners, guides, travel associates, cab drivers and the local committee.”

The circular also states that tourism activities such as jeep safaris, package tours, trekking, and camping will not be allowed.

The local authorities emphasise on the need for travellers to postpone their plans to the region in the coming months as the valley would be far more vulnerable than normal during the winter season.
