Recently we told readers about main rail operator LNER trialling new onboard catering procedures.

Now Avanti West Coast is trialling something similar on its Pendolino services which link London Euston with the Midlands, the Northwest and Scotland.

In short it means standard class passengers can order food and drink delivered to their seat.

Those in first class already have at-seat service. Standard class passengers order their catering using onboard wifi and payment is made by credit / debit card or PayPal.

Click and Collect, another new service, is also on trial. The existing onboard shop will continue to be available.

Says Sarah Copley, executive director, commercial at Avanti West Coast, said:

“These new services will let customers choose the most convenient way for them to buy food and drink. The feedback so far has been really positive.”

There are two main Anglo-Scottish rail operators: Avanti West Coast (operated by First Group 70 per cent and Trenitalia 30 per cent) and LNER (which operates over the East Coast mainline) which is government managed.
