Intercontinental Hotels Group has opened the first of two Even hotels in Greater China, marking the expansion of the wellness-focused brand outside of the United States.

The 172-room Even Hotel Nanjing Yangtze River is located near the National Green Bay Wetland Park and Youth Olympic Stadium, and features an indoor tennis court and swimming pool, a fitness centre and bowling club.

Other facilities include seven meeting rooms, and a water fountain with “spectacular light shows” in the evenings.

IHG launched the Even Hotels brand in 2012, and the first property opened in Connecticut in 2014. It has since grown to 14 propertiesacross the US, with a further 20 in the pipeline (12 of them in Greater China).

A second Chinese hotel is also set to open in Chongli district, around 240km from Beijing, where skiing events will take place during the 2022 Winter Olympics

The brand focuses on “personal wellness at an affordable price point”, with signature in-room facilities including Simmons Beautyrest Pillowtop Mattresses, coloured LED mood lighting, and in-room fitness zones.

IHG said that “With more and more travellers realigning their priorities to put wellbeing first in today’s over-scheduled culture, there has been an increasing endeavour to stick to good routines while on the road”, adding that the wellness trend “has been gaining traction in China”, citing a 2017 McKinsey China survey showing that 65 per cent of Chinese consumers are conscious of health.
