Intercontinental Hotels Group has announced plans for a second Melbourne property under its upscale Voco brand.

The 171-room new-build hotel is set to open in 2023 at the northern end of St Kilda Road in South Melbourne, and will join the brand’s forthcoming Melbourne Central property which is due to open later this year.

IHG said that the accommodation options in the area where the new hotel will be located “are currently limited to serviced apartments”. The hotel will be situated around 3km from the city’s central business district, and upper level rooms will enjoy views across Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Facilities will include “vibrant and sociable restaurant and bar spaces”, as well four meeting rooms and a gym.

The Voco brand launched in 2018, with properties in Australia’s Gold Coast and Hunter Valley among the first to join the collection, and a Sydney hotel also under development.

There are currently five Voco properties in the UK in locations including Oxford, Reading, Cardiff and Solihull.

Commenting on the news Abhijay Sandilya, IHG’s VP development, Australia and Japan, said:

“It’s quite astounding to reflect on the fact that IHG launched the Voco brand just 24 months ago, and we already have two open hotels and another five in the pipeline, three of them in Victoria.

“Clearly it’s striking the right chord with guests and owners. The new-build Voco South Melbourne will bring unique design and memorable guest experiences to this great location, and will complement our Voco Melbourne Central, which is already under construction and scheduled to open later this year.”
