Accor has added a Chicago property under its art-focused brand 21c Museum Hotels.
The hotel is effectively being marketed under two of Accor’s brands – 21c Museum Hotels (in which a majority stake was acquired by Accor in 2018), and the more established (in Europe at least) M Gallery.
The 297-room 21c Museum Hotel Chicago – MGallery Hotel Collection is located in the River North district of the city, and previously operated as The James Hotel, before being rebranded following refurbishment works.
Rooms feature leather and velvet covered headboards, original artwork and Malin + Goetz bathroom amenities, and facilities include a spa, fitness and business centres, and valet parking.
The hotel’s meeting and events space doubles up as a “multi-venue art museum”, which is open to the public when not reserved.
According to Accor, the art museum “will present a captivating new, never-before-seen exhibition, This We Believe, which explores the power and evolution of belief systems – religious, political, economic – and how allegiance to ideology has influenced our current global culture of divisiveness and polarization”.
The property features a double-height lobby, with a signature staircase leading to the exhibition and events space, and floor-to-ceiling windows allowing passers-by to view art in the hotels’ public areas.
Commenting on the news Yohan Amiot, vice president brand management, M Gallery, said:
“21c has helped introduce M Gallery to the United States with an exciting new mode of hospitality, bringing cultural and culinary experiences together, connecting guests with global and contemporary culture, while delving into the roots of each local community.
“The new Chicago hotel is a shining example of what we can accomplish together and marks the continued expansion of our lifestyle ‘boutique’ footprint. We look forward to bringing many more 21c-MGallery projects to life in the near future.”
The brand currently has nine properties in locations including Cincinnati, Louisville and Nashville, with two forthcoming hotels in Des Moines and St Louis.
