Singapore Airlines and its subsidiary SilkAir will temporarily reduce flights across their global network starting February 24 through until May due to “weak demand” as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
The carrier will reduce services to several destinations including Frankfurt, New York, Tokyo, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, Paris, Seoul and Sydney, the airline said on its website.
Singapore Airlines will reduce its services to the US starting April 26, while flights to Europe will be cut starting from March 17. Its services to Japan will be cut starting March 10, while services to Seoul will be reduced as early as February 24. “We will continue to monitor the situation and make further adjustments as necessary,” the carrier said on its website.
Last week, the airline said it had reduced flights to Hong Kong due to a drop in demand amid the coronavirus outbreak. The airline, which typically operates a Singapore–Hong Kong–San Francisco service, removed the Hong Kong stop from February 17 until March 28 on flights SQ001 and SQ002.
As of writing this story, the coronavirus has infected a total of 73,433 people worldwide, killing 1,868, according to South China Morning Post. Singapore has 77 cases according to the newspaper.
Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific has also announced further flight capacity cuts throughout its network for the months of February and March amid the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
