The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BIAL Airport) has introduced several technological initiatives to enable a hassle-free and seamless airport experience with the launch of the fully-automated ‘self bag drop’ machines and Smart Security Lanes.

Hari Marar, managing director, and chief operating officer, Bangalore International Airport, says, “ Earlier, we even did a real-life test of the biometric-based self-boarding process – Digi Yatra. The citizens of Bengaluru have come to associate the BIAL Airport with more than just travel – The Quad by BLR and the Concert Arena now draw non-travellers to the airport, as well.”

Commenting on the aviation market in India, Marar says that it is in recovery mode after a volatile period. “We estimate that passenger volumes at BIAL Airport will be between 55 to 65 million passengers per annum (mppa) in the next five years. To support this growth, BIAL is investing ₹130,000 million for infrastructure expansion, including the south runway, which is operational, and the first phase of Terminal 2.”

Authorities at BIAL Airport reveals that among the airlines, Indigo continued to lead as their passenger figures, to and from Bengaluru, increased by 13 per cent from 13.81 mppa in calendar year (CY) 2018 to 15.61 mppa in CY 2019.

Marar says, “The airport drew 33.65 million passengers during the CY 2019, registering a 4.1 per cent growth, compared to previous year’s 32.33 million.”

BIAL Airport Tweeted:

In terms of new destinations, seven new destinations and two new international airlines were introduced during the course of the calendar year.  Japan Airlines to Tokyo and Lufthansa to Munich – are set to operate from summer 2020.

Meanwhile, BIAL is gearing up for the launch of a one-of-its-kind entertainment and experiential venue. The venue ‘Concert Arena’ will be built by Embassy Group, India’s real estate and urban infrastructure developer, Phase 1 Experiences, a large-scale events organisation and Live Nation Entertainment, a live entertainment company, and is expected to open in the next 18 to 20 months.

At present, Bengaluru is connected to 82 destinations, including 25 international cities.
