As the year ends, we tell you what foodies have been ordering on Swiggy, one of the largest food delivery platform in the country.

The platform’s yearly StatEATistics report on India’s food ordering habits lists some interesting trends from the period between January 2019 until November 2019.

The report shows that comfort food has grown rapidly with a 128 per cent increase in orders. Some of these dishes were methi malai paneer(fenugreek and cottage cheese gravy, gobi matar masala (cauliflower and pea gravy), dal makhani (a lentils dish), mini dosa (crispy, savory pancakes) and idli (rice cake), among others.

The most common first order by new users on Swiggy was biryani (mixed rice dish). The platform reveals that the latter tops the list of most ordered for the third year in a row. Indians ordered an average of 95 biryanis per minute or 1.6 biryanis every second. The most popular ones are boneless chicken biryani, chicken dum biryani, mutton biryani, egg biryani, veg biryani, and paneer biryani.

The report also shows that customers prefer vegetarian toppings on their pizzas. Cheese, onion, paneer, extra cheese, mushroom, capsicum, corn, jalapenos and olives were among the most common toppings on pizza orders.

With overall orders for healthy options crossing 3.5 lakh this year, the latest food trend is the ketogenic diet. Swiggy has noticed a 306 per cent increase in keto specific items ordered in 2019. Dishes like keto brownies, keto-friendly Tuscan chicken and healthy red rice poha were the most ordered in the healthy category.

Additionally, India has found another sweet favourite. Besides 17,69,399 gulab jamun (milk-solid-based sweet) orders and 2,00,301 orders for halwa (Indian dessert) in 2019, Falooda is the newest entry to the top desserts on Swiggy with a whopping 11,94,732 orders this year. A special ice-cream filled Falooda (a cold dessert made with rose syrup, vermicelli, sweet basil seeds with milk) was ordered over 6,000 times in Mumbai. Other sweet treats include the usual suspects such as death by chocolate, tender coconut ice cream, tiramisu ice cream, and saffron halwa.
