Bloc Hotels has announced plans for a new property in Glasgow, to be located opposite the city’s Queen Street Station.

The group has purchased a former cash counting and storage facility on West George Street known as Dale House, and will replace the 1980s building with a new seven storey hotel with retail space.

According to the press release Bloc Glasgow will be “a high-tech, smart hotel that matches the aspirations of the area”.

The Bloc brand debuted in 2011, with a 73-room (since extended to 105 rooms) hotel situated in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, followed by a 245-room property at Gatwick’s South Terminal in 2014.

Business Traveller reviewed the Gatwick hotel shortly after it opened – features of this hotel included free wifi and compact rooms starting from 9.5 sqm.

The group is also currently building the 25-storey Bloc Grand Central next to Birmingham New Street Station.

Commenting on the news Dominic Mayes, property director at Bloc Hotels said:

“We are really excited to have acquired this site and look forward to delivering Bloc Glasgow to this extremely vibrant part of the city.

The property is in a prime location, directly opposite the recently redeveloped Queen Street Station, where the number of people using the station is set to increase by 40 per cent, reaching 28 million by 2030.

This is another defining moment in the company’s ambitious growth strategy, as we continue to expand into key gateway locations.”

Fellow compact hotel brand Yotel is also developing a property in Glasgow, located opposite the city’s Central Station.
