Delhi International Airport Limited(DIAL) has initiated the next phase of expansion for Indira Gandhi International Airport. Scheduled to be completed by June 2022, the phase 3A expansion is aimed at increasing the airport’s capacity to handle the rise in air traffic in addition to strengthening its passenger handling capacity —  passenger handling capacity of Delhi Airport to be 100 million passengers per annum (MPPA)  in next three years and airside capacity to handle 140 MPPA.

Commenting on this expansion plan, Shri I Prabhakara Rao, deputy managing director, GMR Group, said, “The mega expansion of Delhi Airport would not only help the existing airlines to enhance their services but also create adequate room for new airlines to initiate their services. With this expansion, Delhi Airport will once again set a new standard for the airport experience.

“Our vision is to be at the forefront of creating world-class facilities and value-added amenities for our customers and making it one of the best airports across the world. As we rigorously build for the next three years, our focus on efficient operations and superior customer service would remain unwavering.”

The expansion project will see the integration of the departure and arrival terminals of T1, construction of a fourth runway along with dual elevated eastern cross taxiway (ECT). The integrated terminal will feature enhancement in baggage handling, security screening systems and technologies such as facial recognition, automated tray retrieval system, individual carrier system, common usage self service, and self baggage drop kiosks among others.

The plan also includes expansion of T1 apron to provide higher capacity layout with 82 Code C stands, which includes 22 Contact Stands and 8 MARS stands to cater to the increased ATMs. Additionally, the new T1 apron will also be equipped with latest technological upgrades like visual docking guidance system, fuel hydrant system, ground power units and pre-conditioned air.
