American Airlines has become the latest carrier to order the newly-launched Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

The US carrier has converted an existing order for 30 A321 neo aircraft, and placed a further order for 20 of the A321XLR, bringing the total order to 50 aircraft.

The A321XLR was unveiled at the Paris Air Show this week, and has a range of 8,700km (15 per cent more than the A321LR), which Airbus said is the longest of any single-aisle commercial jetliner.

The manufacturer said that the aircraft “will allow airlines to operate the aircraft from US East Coast airports to medium-size European cities”.

Among the other carriers to place orders for the extra long-range aircraft include Aer Lingus, Iberia and Qantas.

AA is the largest Airbus operator worldwide, with 422 aircraft in operation and outstanding orders for 115 A321 neos and A321 XLRs.

Deliveries of the A321XLR to customers are expected to begin in 2023.
